The air cargo performance at Malpensa Airport during the first half of 2024 exhibited significant growth compared to 2023, aligning closely with the record figures of 2021 and 2022. Cargo volumes in June 2024 increased by 7.3% compared to the same month in 2023, while the overall first half of 2024 (YTD) saw an 11.8% rise over 2023 and a notable 36.2% increase over 2019. All-Cargo movements declined by 11.4%, driven by a reduction in Courier flights, which was partially compensated by an increase in Freighter flights. Analyzing the various segments:

  • Courier: the market share decreased from 40.9% in 2023 to 32.8% in 2024. Volumes decreased by 10.2%, and movements dropped by 19.9% compared to 2023. This decline primarily stemmed from reduced Amazon flights and the suspension of UPS flights (since October 2023). DHL Express traffic remained stable.
  • Freighter: notably, there was significant growth, with market share rising from 38.5% in 2023 to 42.3% in 2024. Volumes increased by 22.8%, and movements rose by 19.6%. The substantial impact of the e-commerce sector, predominantly from East Asian imports, was influential.
  • Belly: the market share expanded from 20.6% in 2023 to 24.9% in 2024, with a 34.9% volume increase compared to the previous year's first half. This segment was boosted by the robust recovery of long-haul passenger flights and an overall surge in air transport demand.

General Cargo, encompassing freighter and belly operations, consolidated volumes, advancing from a 59.1% share in 2023 to 67.1% in 2024. This represented a volume increase of 27% over the previous year and a 6.3% increase over 2019. Overall, nearly all major all-cargo carriers reported double-digit growth.

The main carriers in terms of cargo tonnage transported at Malpensa include DHL Express, Cargolux, Qatar Airways, Air China and Turkish Airlines.
